Getting to U Pozzu is as stunning as dramatic Corsican roads can get. Most people also drive in from Porto on the coast, about 30-40 minutes up this winding D84 road that cuts spectacularly through the red granite cliffs of Spelunca Gorges. The road itself is quite good but very curvy with photo opportunities at every turn! If coming from inside(Corte) then you would have passed over Vergio Pass(Col de Vergio)-highest pass by road on island where more likely than not some cows(goats too) plus those famous Corsican pigs might be sitting right in middle roadway all part local charm.
Hotel Aitone perches right above the village, and this makes it easy to spot as you drive into Evisa. Parking here is nothing compared to a mad scramble for a space in one of the coastal towns; park in the hotel’s own spaces or just up the street, and leave your car here for a few days if you want because so many good hikes –not least down into the gorges by way of the old mule track (Sentier des Muletiers)– start practically from its front door.
A bus service operates between Porto and Ajaccio or Corte. Very few other public transport services operate into Evisa. You will need to have your own rental car or motorbike to really get the most out of your stay and be able to discover some hidden corners either within the forest or on a beach somewhere nearby. This is one of the places where being able to drive up to Col de Vergio for a morning hike then down to Porto for an afternoon swim makes it all so special.
