Around Here
Right in the center of Evisa, a village standing guard at the mouth of Spelunca Gorges, is this hotel. Apart from being incredibly scenic, its location makes it more or less at the starting point for some among Corsica's best walking routes. A short drive or even walk brings one to Aïtone Forest famous both for imposing Laricio pines as well as clear natural rock pools where fresh river water swimming can be practiced. The village impresses with stone houses and streets lined by chestnut trees; here exists true traditional island soul.
This is the most famous spot in Corsica from which to watch the sunset. As the sun sets, the granite peaks glow deeply red and purple at nightfall-a magical moment to accompany dinner. The air up here carries a cool freshness of "maquis"(Corsican scrubland) fragrant air that contrasts refreshingly with the hot beach air below. It's an eagle's aerie above the valley, over beers (Pietra being one choice among many local brews available).
Culturally, staying in Evisa puts you right at the heart of the chestnut region. This area is famous for its production of chestnut flour and the resulting cuisine that uses this ingredient heavily. A small village with a couple of cafes and shops selling artisan products and charcuterie, it seems remote and secluded but acts as a well-connected hub for exploration into what lies behind the western coast, making it easy to arrange day trips down to the jagged red cliffs of Calanques de Piana, nearby UNESCO World Heritage site.
